In this 2006 lecture, part of a series on “Lost Christianities,” I talk about the alternative ways in which Jesus was viewed in his own time, in contrast to the Orthodox Trinitarian versions of “Christianity” that triumphed and spread to over two billion people in our own time. Arians, Ebionites, and others, were largely silenced and mostly forgotten. I focus in this lecture on the matter of the paternity of Jesus–and Mary’s perpetual virginity–and those who held alternative views. In the last couple of minutes of the video I finish up with what I think is a very important observation about the whole issue of Mary’s pregnancy…and imagining the best not the worst. The notes I use in the lecture are in the PDF document embedded below the Youtube link.
