I will be speaking live tomorrow morning (Oct 24, 2020) at 11:30 EST/10:30 CST on the topic:
“Who or What is a Prophet Like Moses”
Many of you are familiar with the passage in Deuteronomy 18:15 where Moses speaks in the first person: “YHVH your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brethren–him you shall heed.” Who or what is intended here in the book of Deuteronomy and how are we to understand it in its ancient contexts?
This passage becomes the focus of enormous interpretive speculation in the late 2nd Temple period, quoted in both the Dead Sea Scrolls and the New Testament. In this lecture I will look at various texts of the Torah, Prophets, and Writings–some of them quite mysterious when literally translated–where Moses and other Prophets use a kind of language the scholars call “divine intrusion” into human speech. Moses as the Prophet par excellence appears to be the clear model–but what is involved in a human being speaking unmistakably FOR God–or even AS God–even in the first person? Is this text itself prophetic or “messianic,” as many have thought?
You can hear this lecture live over Facebook and Youtube free of charge through the good graces of UIWU live streaming. Here are the respective links–if you go to these sites at the designated time you will see the live presentation.
